How to spot a bad leader

I spotted this on LinkedIn, written by Bruce KasanoffHe is a ghostwriter for entrepreneurs and executives, see his website at: Kasanoff.com. He is the author of How to Self-Promote without Being a Jerk If you haven’t worked for such a boss, you’re lucky.

The full article can be found at: https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/article/20140930184113-36792-quit-if-your-ceo-talks-like-this?trk=tod-home-art-list-large_0

Bruce says: Here’s how to spot a CEO who is in over his or her head: they still think business is a zero-sum game in which you try to screw everyone else. You can tell such leaders because they often give speeches according to this crude formula:

Climate Change

A friend recently pointed out to me that we have about 100-120 years of weather history data and earth has been here for about 4,000 – 300,000,000,000 years, so we simply don’t have enough data to say which way it’s headed.  I know we can all agree that climate it’s a changing, for sure.   For example, just yesterday it was 83 here and today only getting up to 71.

Excerpt

Naturally occurring changes in winds, not human-caused climate change, are responsible for most of the warming on land and in the sea along the West Coast of North America over the last century, a study has found.

The analysis challenges assumptions that the buildup of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere has been a significant driver of the increase in temperatures observed over many decades in the ocean and along the coastline from Alaska to California.

FOCM Welcomes Martin Cleary

On March 26, FOCM held an event at Fortnight Brewing Company in Cary, NC to welcome Martin Cleary.  Martin has been a member of FOCM for many years, but on this particular night, he officially received his membership card.  As you can well imagine, it was a tearful moment, but they were tears of sheer joy.  In the first picture are from L to R, Martin Cleary, Mike Burrows, Kelly O’Brien, Gayle Grandinetti, Carrie Gallagher.  In the second photo are: 1/2 of Bill Newcomb, Ari Cofini, the Chairman and Martin.

What to do on a Friday

FOCM Member and life coach Heather Hollick is writing a series of articles on managing work and life.  Here’s an excerpt from a recent one and the link to the full article is below that. This one focuses on how to look back at a work week gone by.

It’s Friday — and another week has flown by. Cooler weather and shorter days may finally persuade the leaves to burst out in full color any day now.

This is the part of your week where you remind yourself about your intention to live deliberately. Life is flying by at 1,000 miles an hour. The world is changing very fast. The antidote, of course, is to slow down — just for a moment — and let your inner life catch up with your outer persona. Experience is a great teacher, if we will just pause long enough to absorb her lessons.

You can’t make this up

Spotted on a corporate website where people can fill out comments/requests, etc. was this:

Message:

I am interesting in   a Spellchecker for our CTMS system. What is your recommendation?

What are we supposed to do with this?  What is the appropriate reply?  Come on FOCM’ers, reply with some suggested responses.  Perhaps to get you started:

We are most interesting to responding to your question about recommendationing spellchecked tool.

3 New FOCM Members 1 Night

On March 19, 2014 at Champps in King of Prussia, PA; 3 people received their membership cards.  As those of you who have witnessed the ceremony when just one person gets their card can attest, it is very emotional.  So just imagine a night when 3 people receive their cards.  The looks of sheer joy on these faces pretty much says it all.

Also attending and witnessing the events that night were: Rickie Stevens, Shannon McDonnell and others that were there but I have lost my notes to that event.  Maybe it’s time for a FOCM keeper of the minutes.

You will see that Debi Maloney, Lynn Tanattanawin and Rosie Filling all received their cards that special night.  As you can see, the best descriptions of their reaction to being inducted are: stunned; thrilled, shocked, confused, dumbstruck, speechless and “who are you and what is this card?”
